Dial in
How to get the best out of your beans.
Bought a new bag and the first cup is disappointing? Chances are your grinder is still set for your previous coffee. A few cups and one dial will fix that.
Here's how ↓
Why we can't give you a grind setting
Honestly, we can't tell you which setting to grind our coffee at. Every grinder has its own scale, and even two identical machines don't grind exactly the same. Tasting is the only way. Here's how to go about it.
Here's how
Start with this recipe
18 gcoffee36 gin your cup25–30 sbrew timeBean-to-cup machine: leave the grind setting as it is for now.
Taste
Does it taste sour, bitter or weak? Below you'll find what to do.
Adjust the grind
Move the grinder one step at a time and change nothing else. That way you know exactly what makes the difference.
Sour
Grind finer
Tingles on your tongue. The water ran through the coffee too fast and picked up too little flavour.
Bitter
Grind coarser
Dry, with an aftertaste that lingers. The water ran through too slowly and pulled too much out of the coffee.
Weak
More coffee
Tastes watery. Use one more gram of coffee, or brew a smaller cup.
Tastes good? Remember your setting
Then you're done. With your next bag, start again from this setting.
Volautomaat?
On many models you can only change the grind setting while the grinder is running. Check your manual for how it works on your machine. The first two or three cups after adjusting still contain coffee that was already ground, so taste after that. Not enough flavour? Turn up the strength or choose a smaller cup.
